Hey Guys, thought I would share with what I have posted on AZ right now. A brief history. I ordered a new MMI, controls and radio to attempt a retro fit. Now before the parts even shipped I got word that I may be ok with the current radio and AMP even though they are different part numbers. Now I've had a spare MMI unit on my shelf for about 6 months now. I thought it was an original 3G plus unit from Europe that was released in small numbers when the 3G was first released. I believed it was the European holy grail that supported phone SIM and bluetooth streaming.
Well I couldn't be more wrong. With my car in protection right now due to a glitch in the system I figured no harm in putting the European unit in for testing. At the very least see how the NAV would handle a different continent. Well low and behold, this entire time my Hybrid Q5 European module was actually a US unit!!
So whats with that SIM card slot and phone antenna aerial connection. GOOGLE MAPS!! So believe it or not, plug and play. A couple of my MMI control buttons are wrong but all in all it works. Not sure if rewiring would fix that but I doubt it.
So I was in awe. Couldn't believe it. Ran inside and grabbed an SD card and started capturing images. I managed to convert the unit to A4 instead of Hybrid Q5 and enabled a few things. I only spent 20 minutes on it so lots of settings to sort out but it seems to work perfect. I do have protection going on in my car right now so my radio cuts out ever few seconds but that's expected just like my CD changer. My parking camera and on screen sensor display works no problem.
I can adjust all the normal settings you would expect. Here are some pics from the unit in my car with nothing more than swapping the head unit. Cool huh It seems you can use a SIM card with a data plan to get online.
Some neat finds though. With a SIM in the car you can share a data connection with other devices. The MMI had a built in wireless access point. I was also able to stream Audio via bluetooth to the unit and actually play music without it cutting out due to the protection on my radio.
All very cool. Slowly figuring this out.
You can enable and change the wireless access point. I left most default for testing and I could connect my ipod to the wireless connection. Bluetooth Streaming: Here is a picture of the controls I managed to order for my retrofit. Can't wait to get them.
Now with a rogers SIM I was able to configure the MMI to use the APN settings from Rogers and get google maps working. The connection may be better with other providers in Canada but it worked flawless. For those that wonder what the iNav button is for on the new steering wheels, well you can set for a number of items none of which makes me miss the button.
Things like Map Day/Night more, voice prompts off and on. Got the ADS menu up and going. Strange though, I can only adjust indivdual settings like on the old MMI. Although it shows me the 3 standard options it wont allow me to select them.

This may have to do with the fact we are supposed to have buttons for that as where the new cars don't. I may also be that the default setting coded to individual since we first did this program change to allow us to alter the different settings on the MMI. Not really an issue or problem in any way just something to work on. I went through and recorded all 25 VCDS codes and screen designations.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to get any screen captures except for one. The MMI is very picky about exactly when and how you push the buttons for screen captures so I couldn't seem to get the others. I wasn't going to spend to much time trying since testing and recording 25 screens was painful enough.
Here is the default though. There isn't 25 different images just 25 possible screen settings. I enabled my Aux input and that worked no problem: Tested my ipod functions and that worked ok: Jukebox seems to be good but I couldn't rip anything with what I had: Got the Aux heater/vent enabled again: For what it was worth I enabled USB hub ability: Also captured the new step thats needed to enable Ambient Lighting. So still some work to go but everything seems to function as expected. I'm just limited on testing some things because of he protection status of my car right now.
Finally the holy grail of the conversion. Now I can get these units for people who are interested in the conversion. It's not cheap but much less expensive than dealer. The cost here in NA shipped is $1750 for a brand new US MMI and controls.
The unit can be purchased separate for those that don't care about the buttons being a bit off. For 3G MMI it's a direct swap and the only wiring needed is an antenna wire for GSM for google. The NA cars should have that connection waiting on the antenna though, I know mine did. I'm working with IIBen for UK and Europe peeps since I can get EU and UK units as well.
This all is just to cool Will be working with a few people to figure out non NAV and 2G conversions. I will get this all up on my website at some point but best to reach me by email at for now. For those in Malaysia that are interested give FREDLES LUXURY CONCEPT a call. I work with that shop really closely and they carry most of the mods I do. Thanks going going to the effort of assembling this mega-post David. As he says guys, the way things currently stand those with MMI 3G High (hard drive based navigation from late 2009/2010 on) it is confirmed that you can quite painlessly upgrade. There is a confirmed kit of parts for this upgrade - multimedia unit, controls and a GSM antenna.
MMI 3G Low (dvd based navigation from late 2010/2011 on) is being looked into as well as 2G High and Low systems. David and I have spent quite the number of hours researching and sharing thoughts, and we've got to the point where we're working with owners to test part compatibility so we should be able to nail down final kit requirements for these systems very soon. MMI 3G Low will likely be a multimedia unit, controls, GSM antenna, screen and screen surround trim - though it may well require additional harnesses. MMI 2G Low will require all of the aforementioned but will definitely require quite a few new looms. MMI 2G High is the same as MMI 2G Low minus the screen surround trim. A number of tests need to be done to confirm compatibility with the various different Radios and Amplifiers available across different years, amongst other parts. Once we get these sorted we'll start work on the non-nav cars - for those who have no navigation and are interested, if you are able to email or PM me a VCDS AutoScan along with a detailed breakdown of your options (whether you have AMI, B&O, DAB radio, SAT radio, etc) that would help us answer a few unknowns.
Anyone in Europe that is interested in ballpark figures if you could email or PM me your vehicle year and a detailed breakdown of options. I'll be doing installs in the South of England for next to nothing but for those further afield a write up and support will be a better option else I'll have to start factoring extra costs. My email address is.
Hey Rob, so hows the new ride going with the lowered suspension? Been thinking about your car a lot after the swap it looks great! It's not a matter of enabling them, some units just don't have them. Your unit has a part number of 666 (evil) and the google map unit is 746 which has the SIM slot. So the only way to get google in your car is to swap the unit.
As you can see from the pictures above I did get google maps working in my car here in Canada with the proper unit. On another note per our conversation it looks like I can get ADS enabled on your menu as well. Unfortunately I'm going to be tied up tomorrow but we'll hook up soon. Guys, for people in Canada you have to replace your MMI and if pre 2013 console as well.
You do not need to get buttons with a start button if you don't have start. Anything without 3G is still being figured out but would need more work as you can imagine. Cost for the US units here right now is $1350. I have placed a few orders for people and a got a few extra's just in case. UK unit's Ben is working with people since he is more local and can compound some shipping costs. I even got a couple units going to Germany direct from the supplier since they are in the EU in an undisclosed secret bunker location.
After the complete Facelift 2010 I decided to retrofit the MMI 3G on my Q7. Yesterday I've DONE a first step on the conversion of the oem 2G(second generation) multimedia System into a 3G (third Generation) one. I was searching for a 5F INFORMATION ELECTRONICS (the main Unit) for Q7 from the last november but impossible to find one on the used market and a new one is priced 3000 EURO. On the Q7 the main unit is normally installed in dash panel front center on the old 2G-CDC place. Finally last month I was talking with my usual supplier darek70 (THE KING OF HIDDEN MENU)and he told me: why don't you use a cheaper A6/A8 unit instead of the very rare Q7 unit? So I decided and bought: 4E0 035 670 A8 Unit with car phone Sap 4F0 035 061 EU DAB Radio 4F0 919 604 LCD SCREEN + Adapter wiring set (1250mm 4pin ) 4E0 971 086 H + 3D0 972 708 flat contact housing.
In reality with the Engineering menu (hidden menu Setup+Car)it is possible to transform an A6-A8 3G main unit into a Q7 one with all the spec needed only by coding it. The original idea was to mount the 5F on the Glovebox but when I saw the 5F unit dimensions and the room on the Q7's glove compartement I decided to try the installation under the Armrest on the old AMI place. I asked to craigyb and audir8 if the installation backward to the direction of drive had some contraindications and they confirmed me no problems so yesterday morning with the help of my electric-man Emy (he prepared the conversion wiring loom for the retrofit) using the 2 Quadlock connectors and the quantity of wires to soldier we started the job and yesterday night I had the MMI 3G with the problem of Component Protection (no Audio and No Video)but essentially installed and working. This morning my dealer removed the C.P.
And now I can see the VIDEO and hear the music too. The DAB has some problems but I don't have any error on the radio and the aerials and boosters have been replaced with the new 3G ones. I have ordered the new GATEWAY if i want the complete communication from the Cluster and MMI and I have to find a 3G-CLIMATE CONTROL Panel otherwise I cannot see the climate controls on the MMI display. My 'old' 2G MP3 CHANGER is working like a charm with the 3G SYSTEM and NAVIGATION is working perfectly on the LCD screen but not on the FIS.
Some more news and pictures soon. Here the faults I have on the 5F: Friday,09,April,2010,21:5 VCDS Version: Beta 10.3.0 Address 5F: Information Electr. Sounds like mine, I managed to occasionaly search up and down, but the MUX's kept dissappearing. It's hard to say if it is an antenna issue or the radio itself, I can't test until two weeks time when I get my Q7.
I know my radio works well on FM/DAB so when I install I can narrow it down to the antenna system if I get no reception on DAB. Can you list the antenna modules you swapped by part number to cross reference. I will be making a shopping list this week. Does your Q7 have heated front seats as there is a 3G climate unit on ebay currently but it doesn't have heated seats. The new aerials amplifiers I have installed for the 3G RadIo-Tv units are the following: 4L0 035 225AC c-pillar right R111(RC+TV3) 4L0 035 225AG c-pillar left R112(FZV +TV2 + AM-FM2 + DAB) 4L0 035 225 R rear-lid upper R24(AM-FM1-TV1) Normally a 2G system uses 4 aerials amps: the fourth is mounted on the rear door and it must be disconnected. I was very documented on this argument that I did study during the winter just thinking to this retrofit. About my front Seats: yes they are heated and I have also the Rear Climate Unit so I have to find a SW: 4L0 910 043 C - HW:4L0 820 043 AB or AC.
Dab ok Finally managed to activate DAB on my 3G Radio. After a complete SW-Update with the 8R0 906 961J all the components have the last version but the DAB was always stuck with the old bayern station in memory. Today I've tested it with a stupid external antenna in a zone where I was sure the DAB reception was optimal and bam.it has started to work also with images sorry for iPhone pictures: Now I have to understand why it didn't start with his standard antenna which I tested on VCDS Measuring-Blocks and results perfectly working Bad news from the compatibility with the 3G MMI and my cluster: after all the test of this week I'm sure I have to replace it with a newer one. Click to expand.Yes after the reparation of the left side booster the DAB is now working.honestly with the ext.antenna it was more sensible to the reception but it is working. Anyway the DAB it's not so important for me.eventually I'm worried about television reception and as I don't have yet the new tv-tuner I cannot test it. Another problem of today is the Gateway: I had ordered a 4E0 907 468 C, the last 26 Pin I found on Etka but it is arrived an HW.06 SW.0060 exactly the same I have, completely useless, and my dealer is incapable to order me a SW. 0071 wich is what I need.
On the other hand I have the 20 Pin 4F0 907 468 N previously ordered (they didn't accept to swap the part ordered) and my question is are we sure that i cannot use it with the old BEM etc.? Congratulations for your Q7 I'm sorry but on the confusion of my retrofit I didn't realized that you are going to become also a Q7 owner. I finished my conversion as well, just awaiting the 3G TV tuner to arrive, car is currently running on a 2G tuner and I don't want to upgrade that to 3G as they are hard to obtain. I had issues with the new AC panel, when installed my AC stopped cooling correctly. Around October 2007 Audi changed the V2 fresh air blower/controller and AC wiring. So the fan showed as open circuit in the diags with the new AC panel.
I replaced the V2 fan controller with a new revision and made some wiring changes to the controller and AC panel and it is now working correctly, which is a relief as it is 26 deg C here today.

I would like to post how this worked for me: – If your MMI does turn on after clicking the On/Off button, and immedietly after the Audi logo back off, don’t worry. Without the engine running, but power on this never worked for me. – Start the engine, keep it running for as long the 3CD updates takes – Go to the SW Update menu as in the tutorial – Put in CD1 (25 min) - Everything needed is auto selected, so you can just proceed the update – Put in CD2 (2 min) - if you have no bluetooth you will see nothing is selected for this CD. – Put in CD3 (10 min) - Everything needed is auto selected, so you can just proceed the update – Done! Hello, I have an Audi A6 (2006). I updated MMI to version 5570 a while ago and all worked well.
I had AMI retrofitted recently. I do not know which version AMI the software is. I have an iPod touch (5th gen) and attach it using an Audi 30 pin cable (4F0051510AG) and an Apple lightning adapter. When I try to use the iPod through AMI, it is hit-and-miss as to what happens. Sometimes it is fine and plays without any problems while sometimes it says the device does not have any playable tracks, or it might show some tracks but then freeze when I try to play them. Please can you help!
Do I need to run the MMI update again / update AMI / or use a different cable?? Many thanks for your help. My car is a A6 AVANT 3.2FSI QUATTRO with MMI 2G. In MMI the SW number is C6-HU 6362 07.4.0 0444, which is a strange software version number when comparing with what other audi owners post on the web. I’m wondering if it is a different software version regime because of its Japanese origination or language pack. I want to upgrade my MMI system using the MMI 2G software update to version 5570 via the red screen and loading the cd’s one by one (3 in total).
I’m hoping this will overwrite the japanese language pack currently loaded onto my MMI system. Do I load the Euro version or is their an Aus NZ version I should be looking for? Hi, i have tried updating my mmi 2g high and cd1 went successful, i then put in cd2 which came up with a fail and asked if i wanted to retry,i clicked on retry and it just froze, left it for hours and nothing happened, even taking key out it stayed on, in the end i had to disconnect battery, now the mmi boots up but radio etc works then goes off for a second etc, whenever i try to do anything it just keeps jumping,it doesn’t display anything anymore for heated seats a/c,parking etc, and if i try the update again it just stays on reading meta data information and does not change, please help.

The MMI had a built in wireless access point. I was also able to stream Audio via bluetooth to the unit and actually play music without it cutting out due to the protection on my radio. You can enable and change the wireless access point. I left most default for testing and I could connect my ipod to the wireless connection. Cucm remote patch configuration: software free download.
